GUI to CUI

I remember a friend of mine was able to get my computer to boot under CUI, and the command 'start x' started the GUI.

Can someone help me with booting up my computer through CUI.

Well, the first thing I can tell you is that the command is startx

However, we need more information in order to help you properly. What exactly are you trying to achieve? What version of fedora are you using?

Edit /etc/inittab

At the bottom you will find a line like id:5:initdefault:

Change the 5 to a 3 and you will boot to multiuser character based terminals instead of a GUI. You can then startx to start the graphical process.

You'll need to be root to edit the file.

I am using F12. I'm just trying to start under CUI and mess around see what I learn. Nothing more.

Re: GUI to CUI

in fedora 19:

# inittab is no longer used when using systemd.
#
# ADDING CONFIGURATION HERE WILL HAVE NO EFFECT ON YOUR SYSTEM.
#
# Ctrl-Alt-Delete is handled by /etc/systemd/system/ctrl-alt-del.target
#
# systemd uses 'targets' instead of runlevels. By default, there are two main targets:
#
# multi-user.target: analogous to runlevel 3
# graphical.target: analogous to runlevel 5
#
# To set a default target, run:
#
# ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/<target name>.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target
