Commands and passwords echo'ed to screen...

Hi All, long time reader, first time poster, so go easy!

I've been using Fedora for some years, though never as my main OS. A few months ago, my pc spilled it's innards all over the floor, so with a new (second hand!) pc, I decided to use Fedora as my main OS. As such, I'm slowly learning things that you don't normally get to see when using it as a headless server/test machine.

Right now, I have an issue with dual monitors, but that's not the reason for this post. Having been playing with nvidia-settings, nvidia-xconfig and the nvidia drivers (now removed courtesy of yum), I now have a strange situation.

Basically, I have everything echo'ed back to screen when in the console. This includes passwords when logging in and using su. Now, I understand that it might have something, however convoluted, to do with display drivers (thinking along the lines of ssh/telnet echo...), but find it a little hard to believe.

And to top it all off, I now have lost tab-completion and "up" for previous commands!! The shell is bash (ps -p $$), and I haven't updated anything else when installing/uninstalling the nvidia stuff, which has me confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's a difficult probable an not related to bash completion or other problems that have been created.

So first we should examine the tty control parameters

[stevea@crucibulum Desktop]$ stty -a| grep echo
isig icanon iexten echo echoe echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop -echoprt
echoctl echoke

The '-' means he particular echo feature is off. The "-echo" setting may recude th eproblem but that's a bandaid. I suspect some othe rprocess is copying the KB input to the Xserver.

Also see if 'xev'reports the double characters too.

Does that need to run locally, not through ssh?

I cant determine what this all means as i'm out and about at the mo, so i'll check it myself if need be when i get back home...
