status of support for intel gma 3650

Hi folks, it's been a while since i have been here.

I have purchased ASUS-1225C which has intel Atom N280(cedar trail) with integrated gma3650 graphics chip.

I know , the situation has been quite pathetic so far, intel being a d*ck and not rleasing video drivers , is there a simple workaround to get 720p videos play on this tiny and beautiful machine , with Fedora 17 or 18 ?

(currently i can't even play 240p videos without stutter , flash based video playback is slightly better, youtube 480p runs fine.)

will(are) there be any drivers of these chips like nouveau and integrated in mainline kernel?

what are my best options given the situation, any other distro with decent support out-of-the box for this chipset.

P.S: I ignored graphcs aspect while making a purchase but I didnot know situation was very bad with gma 3650 , i was confident that i would get out of the box support for any card on fedora (as fedora kernels are new so are drivers).I like the netbook , is quite slick and I love the way Asus designed it, it's just that damn graphics driver!

Good luck with that.

Last time I checked the reviews said the new atom was still too slow for HD videos.

Maybe the ASUS-1225B with an AMD E-450 APU would have been a better choice for video playback?

I know dude , I am in trouble, AMD E-450 based ASUS-1225B is not available in our country(India)[not atleast easily available].

can someone tell me why intel being such a dick? I also heard there are no good drivers for vista/7 for this GPU, why intel why so Evil?

thanks anayway.

Re: status of support for intel gma 3650

I recently bought ASUS 1015CX... and I have been struggling with Linux on it. Since its a netbook and since I intend to use it when on the move, so HD video playback is not a huge issue for me.

I am currently running Bodhi and Fedora xfce and things are not that bad.

However, I love if it has GPU support in Linux...

Also I suggest you try Meego or Android OS on it both have support for cedar trail... I haven't tried these so I won't be able to vouch for 'em.

Re: status of support for intel gma 3650

Hi fedvasu,

you mean Atom N2800 ? it has a GPU (gma3650) from the familly of PowerVR SGX 545 , which is not from intel, but from another company (unlike the Sandy and Ivy Bridge, with the HDx000 GPU...).
So Intel cannot provide free and open drivers for this GPU.
So you cannot find it in a standard Fedora installation.
You are more or less in the same situation than with a Nvidia or AMD GPU.
Now the question is, do Intel provide 'closed source' drivers for this GPU ? I don't know...

who make it? silicon graphics?

I got a few links where people have a ppa for ubuntu 12.04 but let's see.

ppa:cedartrail usage
meta-info of the corresponding(?)package in multiverse
