Fedora 11 and kernel 2.6.30 series causes hangs

Hello everyone,

I see there are lots of messages about fedora 12 freezing.
Actually I have such a problem with fedora 11 since I updated to kernel 2.6.30.

My laptop, all of a sudden, freezes. Everything is freezed: mouse is not working, keyboard not responding (hitting caps lock produces nothing), can't switch to terminals, ctrl+alt+canc don't work. I can just push the power button to shutdown the system. BUT the hard disk activity is still going on. I can see and hear the sleeping daemons that cause some usual disk activity while the rest of the system is completely freezed.

My system is a HP DV5-1025el with an AMD Turion ZM-80, Ati Radeon HD3450, 4Gb of RAM and 250gb HDD.
I got fedora 11 regularly updated, now has kernel 2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11, but it is used to happen also with older 2.6.30 kernels, NEVER happened with 2.6.29 kernels. Video driver isn't the cause, since it happens with both proprietary fglrx and OSS radeon drivers.

Couldn't it stll be happening because of graphics drivers . . . ?
xorg.conf sometimes passes a driver module over if it doesn't have all it needs . . .
and ends up with another or the same driver module getting actually loaded.

kernel really seems the core of the issue, and what is different between them tho.

But anyway . . . I'd try looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log files to see if the warnings there are really different just in case . . . but I dunno.
(from runlevel 3 text mode, of course, booted init 3 from grub kernel line)

Well i just looked at Xorg.0.log and I get no errors at all (EE) and a few warnings coming from fglrx and aiglx claiming something i think it's not really important.
I get no problems about wrong modules. Also when I had radeon OSS driver I previously uninstalled everything coming from fglrx, mostly because the glx module was preventing software opengl rendering.

Ah I forgot to say frezees always happen when I'm moving the mouse.
Also, I have the default runlevel set to 3, so my boot is textual. When I try to close the X session I'm supposed to get back to the text mode shell, but I just get a lockup. This happens again with both proprietary fglrx and opensource radeon drivers.

The strange thing is that if I switch to a text shell using CTRL+ALT key combination I get no problems at all.

I found this thread after running a google search for the same problem... Kernel 2.6.30, HP dv5000,AMD Turion64. I was curious if you've found anything in reference to it. It seems that it might occur more frequently when firefox is open versus not open, but I can't confirm that yet. I'm wondering if this is a bug of some sort.

FYI, I found this link when googling, it might be applicable:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F11_bugs

Specifically:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Commo...phics_adapters

I tried their first suggestion, setting nomodeset in the kernel parameters. It hasn't frozen since, but we're letting it run a little longer. Let me know if that helps at all!

Try the .32 kernel first http://admin.fedoraproject.org/updat...6.32.9-39.fc11
Code:
su -
yum update --enablerepo=u*g

Well I have to say that it always happened with firefox opened (even minimized) and while I was moving the mouse.

I remember that when I installed fedora 11 there was a problem with ati catalyst drivers causing freezes when moving the mouse. Maybe these things two are related, so I applied again the fix because in the meantime I updated ATI drivers and deleted the catalyst configuration file (that another file int /etc/ati I currently don't remember...) to let new drivers work. You can find the fix here:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpo...postcount=3607

Then I apparently had no more freezes.

Now automatic updates two days ago put kernel 2.6.32 and looks like it is working flawlessy.
If I will get more freezes, I will report them here.
