Sometime this weekend ....

I have to go to my wife's office and setup 2 new Windows 7 desktops. I will need to get these computers configured for their network and then I'll likely have to configure their new NAS.

The more I use Linux the less I use Windows. I have less experience with Windows 7 than I do with any previous version of Windows. Additionally, I've never touched a NAS.

Please say a prayer for me

Re: Sometime this weekend ....

It's a pain, especially when compared to Linux installations. A bunch of reboots, getting drivers--though that's much improved in Windows 7.

It's not, IMHO, as bad as an XP install though it takes a lot more space.

I would recommend going into control panel, finding the performance thingie, then switching it to best performance (as opposed to best looking, like myself.)

Then, if they find it too Spartan, you can check off the bottom 4 things--I forget what they are, but at any rate, our Windows guy (who is also a Linux guy--kind of a classic geek type), showed me this and it does make a difference.

Re: Sometime this weekend ....

I feel sorry for anyone who has to install Windows 7. I've found it to be worse than XP. At work I've seen people get the old Blue Screen of Death in Windows 7, which I thought was supposed to have gone away. And it is dog slow with the default GUI. I had to make it use the "Classic" Win2K-style GUI to have any kind of decent responsiveness. Fedora 17 running in Virtual PC under Windows 7 is actually faster than Win7 itself, at least on my PC at work.

Ah, the pain of being "the guy who knows about computers"... I guess we all get that occasionally.

Good luck, and I hope you weren't planning to do anything else today!

Ah the pain....

Since it is a consulting work issue... you ease the pain by raising the rates...

Re: Sometime this weekend ....

Ya well, I think Win/NT was the last Win I was really in touch with and XP made me ill.

As for prayers - I adhere to Oskar Homolka's, original tough guy image in R.L.Stevenson's 1937 "Ebb Tide", when told to say his final prayers - "eh, I don't pray, shoot!".

Still I think I'll cite the words of the immoral James Brown, "Uhh, good god, I cant stand myself (when you touch me) ....Can't get right, need a little time ... " A couple hours in a hot shower may help too !

Re: Sometime this weekend ....

Rates? This is a freebie. The 2 lawyers my wife works for are the most generous people I've ever met. If you only knew how much they've done for her over the years, and of course, a lot of their generosity directly affects me too.

The 2 new computers are HP boxes purchased from Staples. Only need to turn them on and go to work. Everything is pre-installed.

I replaced the "server" with one of the new HP's and added three existing printers. These printers will be shared through this box. That was simple. Next, I replaced my wife's computer with the other new HP. On her computer I needed to add the three networked printers and make sure they work. That was a success. Windows 7 made this incredibly easy. Part three was setting up the new NAS, something called a "Buffalo Box". This was pretty simple too, just followed the instructions provided with the device. Part 4 was fixing the boss's XP box. That was locking up so we dusted the inside and rebooted. All good, but try adding a printer shared on a Windows 7 box to this XP box. Ain't happening yet. Part five was making sure the other boss's HP laptop could see and use the three printers. Success there too.

Spent about 3.5 hours there today. We will probably go back tomorrow to see if we can clean up some loose ends. Hopefully come Tuesday morning they will be set to go without issue. Of course, my wife will now have to provide support for co-worker Lois, who will be transitioning from XP to Win7. That should provide hours of fun for her

One issue is the Konica-Minolta printer/copier that they have. This is one of the three printers I mentioned. Although it works, it's not quite right. I know nothing about this type of device, accessed through a local ip address, 192.168.1.150. The best thing for Dawn (my wife) to do would be to call the Minolta tech and have him come in and make sure everything is as should be with it. She plans on doing just that Wednesday.

Oh, and one more thing. Although this is a freebie I will inherit the old computers. I build them in 2008 using Asus boards with AMD Dual Core CPU's and 2GB memory. These will be nice toys for me to play with
