F18 Wine headaches

Fedora 18 32 bit, updated as of this morning.

I want to install a Windows browser, to run a JNLP app which only runs under Windows browsers per the supplier. App requires JavaWS. Trying to run the JNLP using JavaWS under Linux without a Windows browser results in "cannot read or parse JNLP file".

I've installed Wine using yum install. No problems there - but there's no Wine browser showing up in the Wine apps list.

So I downloaded the Windows 32 bit version of FireFox installer, and tried to run the installer using Wine launcher.

FireFox installer gets to about 60%, then just freezes. I've left it for several hours, but never moves farther. When it freezes, Task Manager shows 165M memory used, but 0 cpu.

Same thing happens if I try to install Opera, or several other Windows browser install exe's.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
Tom

Re: F18 Wine headaches

Wine has it's own IE, but it's kind of hard to get to. It's best to just make a symlink to it.

C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe

You should not have that issue with the other browsers. Then again, I think we each have different experiences in Wine. iTunes and Maxthon won't work well for me in Wine for one reason or another, and other people have a good experience. I use an XP VM in Gnome Boxes, VBox, or Player to run XP. Works pretty well and covers for Wine.

Try the Wine IE and see if that does what you need.

Re: F18 Wine headaches

Thanks very much.

I opened Wine File Manager, then cranked up iexplore.exe, but result was:

Program Error window - "The program iexplore.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Here's the detail list:

ever thought about just trying to fix the JNLP file so that IcedTea's JavaWS can recognize it? i can't imagine its very complex, but i'm just guessing here.

Thanks. That might solve the basic problem, but I've no idea how to diagnose and fix the JNLP file. IcedTea will open the JNLP file, but results in "Fatal Read Error. Cannot read or parse the JNLP file" Here are the error details:

net.sourceforge.jnlp.LaunchException: Fatal: Read Error: Could not read or parse the JNLP file. You can try to download this file manually and send it as bug report to IcedTea-Web team.

Re: F18 Wine headaches

I'd suggest using Virtualbox and some sort of Windows VM. I usually use XP in VMs, works well enough.

As far as Wine is concerned - I rather use Crossover from Codeweavers. It is well worth the expense.
