Re: Is anyone actually enjoying Gnome3?

As for most non-web programmers fleeing Gnome for other DEs I highly doubt that Gnome has lost most of its user base because of the move from ver. 2.x to 3.x. I do suspect that Ubuntu's swithch to Unity probably made quite an impact, but Ubuntu changing DE is something quite different than users making an active choice to move from Gnome Shell.
...Uhm ... Yeah. About that.

Re: Is anyone actually enjoying Gnome3?

Yes, I'm enjoying Gnome 3.

I'm not much better than your average mug user, I know barely enough about programming to be able to edit simpler scripts when needed, provided someone else tells me which scripts to edit. I understand what Gnome-shell is in an abstract sense but have never dreamed of trying to do anything with it.

Had used KDE for years, mostly for managing and editing a large collection of photos and preserving my ageing cd collection. My very first impression of gnome3 - I hated it, but it was quick to start. So much quicker than kde that I started using gnome if I was just going to jump on the net quickly to look something up and going back to kde if I was going to be using the computer for a while. Once I got used to gnome I started liking it.

I think it's just natural human behaviour to want to reject change. Sometimes I wish things could be as simple as my old dos box running xTree Gold. I still remember there being a fear of the mouse and the new point and click interface when it first came out, it was too dangerous, people would be able to drag and drop files into the wrong place by accident. "Remember - the first point and click interface was made by Smith and Wesson."

Where Gnome3 really shines for me is showing people with very little computer experience how to get on the net and set up a gmail account. For a completely new computer user the Gnome3 interface seems very easy to use and they take to it straight away.

I live in a remote comunity where a lot of people still have had very little exposure to computers and I've become their unofficial communtiy desktop help. I charge 2 beers an hour.

Fresh buffalo, mud crabs and prawns are also acceptable currency.

Cheers,

Andrew.

I agree completely, they are ruining the cleanest Shell there ever was, for bells and whistles they can't make work, they take away our ability to easily tweak it ! which empowers ownership to drive proliferation,

kinda sux, will be looking into KDE soon also...
: )~

It will be interesting to see if there is any changes coming out of the "competition" of Unity on Fedora?

IMO the only thing that Unity does better is a list of recently used programs which is incorporated into the dash and the enhancement of the control centre (the option to change the theme and some generic side bar behaviour settings).
It also looks like it is being faster developed (progress wise) but that might be because they can focus on the design and let Gnome do the work that's harder to notice.

On topic: I am actually enjoying Gnome Shell since it came out!
It needs a bit of tweaking but I really like its work flow and minimalistic interface design.
As long as they do not sacrifice more and more features for a more esthetical look (or at least give the users the option to choose whether it be with options or through extensions) it will be fine.

Re: Is anyone actually enjoying Gnome3?

And with that ...

I hate to be a killjoy, but the bottom line is Gnome3 is here to stay, and it has had the very positive and unique effect of re-generating interest in GUI designs, development of alternatives, and serving an up-and-coming market, (That being the tablet/smartphone shenanigans. <....> ) all at the same time. Credit where credit is due.

Some will come to accept it as it is, others will either choose one of the several excellent alternatives, or roll up their sleeves and develop something new. That's the beauty of FOSS and linux. You can break it and keep all the pieces.

In any case, as a community, we all lose little and gain more.

That being said ... It certainly is good to see much of the early heat/passion gone from the arguments, and more critical thinking being applied to the subject. But the word has come down from lofty reaches of Mount Redhat, that for better or for worse ... it just is what it is, so it is ours to keep, change, or drop.

[stupid sports analogy ]
And to be honest, It seems to me that both that decision, and its outcome and ramifications, haven't changed a helluva lot since the wild-eyed GnomeGnuts slammed this highball scorcher of a serve into our court the first time. Yeah, we've returned it, certainly with no lesser degree of heat, more than once, but the ball is still in play. So, what say we get our heads back in the game, and see where the volley takes us.
