There are addons for the firefox browser.
Dont know about IE, those addons for Chrome/Chromium dont work anymore.

I'd say its not depending on the OS but on the browsers capabilities.
Not sure if this counts as well:
Iif you dont have the codecs, it might not work that flawless.

+1 for jDownloader. You better install JRE for this to work properly. It will work with openjdk but the gui will be somewhat messed up.
No difference if you install JDL 2 beta, openjdk is fine...

Install the beta version, it's more up to date and supports (if you need) way more o-c-h. You don't have to reinstall or something, beta turns into the final release through updates.
