Smile install python 3.1

I want to install python 3.1 on my fedora 11.
I tried using yum update python command but it says no packages marked for update
the current version is 2.6
which file should i download from www.python.org and where do i save it ?
also how to install it ?
I searched for help on google and fedora forums but there is not a single post on updating to python 3
As I am new to Linux so I have never used any other command apart from yum
I hope someone please takes this into consideration.
Thanks and Regards
Rajiv

You say you are new to linux, so if that is correct i dont get any reason why you need python 3.1. Do you realize its non backwards compatible and many python programs dont yet run on python 3
Still if you want you could download the source file from http://www.python.org/download/releases/3.1/ and compile it yourself.

Python is a coding language.
3.1 would need to be debugged to be compile by the latest compiler.
All the py programs would need changed to comply.
all the programs using py may need to be changed and /or compiled.

A few man years at least.

install python 3.1

Since i am starting to learn python then I thought it would be better to start with python 3 directly.
which one should i download gzipped source tar or bzipped source tar and in which directory to install it and how to compile it?
I hope someone makes python 3 available on fedora for users who want to download it or lists the steps for installing it for fedora 11
Thanks and Regards

Python is not a compiled language. It is interpreted. That said, it is true that some changes would need to be made, though a few years seems a bit excessive.

python is coded in C and C++ and therefore needs to be compiled and work in the newest compiler version in Fedora.

The interrupted code to used by user written modules may need to change.

All the python modules would need to be re-compiled.

There could be unknow bugs So serious testing is needed.

10 guys x 6 months = 5 man years.

Re: install python 3.1

Both Python 2.6 (or is it up to 2.7 now?) and Python 3.1 are in the fedora 13 repositories, and they are set up to coexist. Replacing python 2.x with 3.x would not be a good idea because numerous programs have not yet been ported to python 3.

Read the file /usr/lib/python3.1/site.py to understand how python paths work.
