F17 KDE and no Netbeans IDE ?

Got F17 KDE installed and everything seems to work pretty good. Got Nvidia installed with Compiz etc. Now I run into software issues. I've installed 'Netbeans' from the repositories and it isn't to be found anywhere on the system. No icon, etc. When I try to run it from Konsole nothing happens. Reinstalled all the packages again. . . still nothing. Can't seem to figure this one out. Any help is appreciated.

Rich

BTW F17 KDE is still my favorite distro now despite Gnome 3.4 which I do have on a laptop. . Kubuntu 12.04 and Mageia both come in 2nd place and work well also. . . .

Re: F17 KDE and no Netbeans IDE ? ? ?

Probably your JDK isn't set up or installed?

Open a console or terminal and run
Quote:
java -version
and then
Quote:
alternatives --config java
( just hit the Enter for that second one when it's at the
"Enter to keep the current selection[+], or type selection number:" prompt )

post here what those say

Re: F17 KDE and no Netbeans IDE ? ? ?

There are 4 programs which provide 'java'.

Selection Command
-----------------------------------------------
1 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0-openjdk.x86_64/bin/java
2 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.5.0-gcj/bin/java
3 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0u04-sun-i586/bin/java
*+ 4 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.7.0u04-sun-x64/bin/java

Enter to keep the current selection[+], or type selection number:

'enter' for 4.

Nothing happens when I try to execute the program from Konsole or from the Kickoff KDE app where I directly execute the bin file in the directory where it is located. Permissions are check on so that it will run. But nothing still happens. . . What am I doing wrong here?

Re: F17 KDE and no Netbeans IDE ? ? ?

I have the "tarball" style installation since I'm using the 7.2 Beta netbeans, so I don't have the netbeans rpm installed to
actually try the command I have below but I think this will work.

Can you run this exactly? (copy and paste below to your terminal), this will show what jdk netbeans is trying to use:

Quote:
grep netbeans_jdkhome `rpm -ql netbeans | grep netbeans.conf`
or if you just run "rpm -ql netbeans" you can see where the netbeans.conf file is and
manually look in it to see what netbeans_jdkhome is set to.

I'm just getting a blinking cursor in Konsole both in just usr and root-user mode. Nada. . . nothing. . . .I could wait a few more minutes and see is something happens. . .

Re: F17 KDE and no Netbeans IDE ? ? ?

I don't understand, do you mean you ran my requested command and that happened? (asking about what you said in post #4)
Are you saying the prompt in your konsole never returned or did the command just seem to do nothing and the prompt returned?
Quote:

rpm -ql netbeans

That seems to imply it never got installed, at least not as the official Fedora package.
This is really weird, in post 1 you've said you've installed the Fedora repository netbeans, the package for that should be
called netbeans. There's a bunch of other, related packages like (note I'm listing these for Fedora 16 as I don't have Fedora 17 here yet
but it should be similar):
Quote:
netbeans-apisupport.noarch : Common NetBeans Platform Development Related Libraries for NetBeans
netbeans-cvsclient.noarch : NetBeans CVS Client Library
netbeans-ide.noarch : Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Libraries for NetBeans
netbeans-java.noarch : Common Java Related Libraries for NetBeans
netbeans-javaparser.noarch : NetBeans Java Parser
netbeans-platform.noarch : NetBeans Platform 12
netbeans-platform-harness.noarch : Build harness for NetBeans Platform 12
netbeans-platform-javadoc.noarch : Javadoc documentation for NetBeans Platform 12
netbeans-resolver.noarch : Resolver subproject of xml-commons patched for NetBeans
netbeans.noarch : Integrated Development Environment (IDE)
netbeans-svnclientadapter.noarch : Subversion Client Adapter
but some of those are optional

Try this simple thing to see what's installed that's netbeans related:
Quote:
rpm -qa | grep -i netbeans

netbeans-platform-javadoc-7.0.1-5.fc17.noarch
netbeans-javaparser-7.0.1-2.fc17.noarch
netbeans-platform-harness-7.0.1-5.fc17.x86_64

Re: F17 KDE and no Netbeans IDE ? ? ?

I've manually gone to the F17 repo and looked, and your package list of those six packages looks like what is in there.

Are you sure you installed the Java JDK and not the Jave JRE?
Quote:
[root@localhost richard]# rpm -ql netbeans
package netbeans is not installed
ps. yes, I think Fedora 17 doesn't package a package called 'netbeans' any more, it's those six you listed in post 7. I'm not sure where the 'netbeans' script is packaged anymore. I don't see it in the netbeans-platform rpm....

You could find out where the script is via:
Quote:
yum provides \*/bin/netbeans
but it might take a while to run since the release of Fedora 17 has the repos really active

So what do you see when you do this:

1) run netbeans so that the prompt is just sitting there blinking
2) go to another terminal and run this:
Quote:
ps -ef | grep netbeans
what do you see? What I'm trying to see is if the JDK actually gets launched, if so you'll see a really huge command line full of jdk options from that command but if it's stuck somewhere in the netbeans script before the jdk you'll see a much smaller thing like
Quote:
richard 24280 22927 0 11:38 pts/5 00:00:00 /usr/share/7.0.1/bin/netbeans
If it's hanging in the script before launching the jdk, it's likely a problem with the script or your environment

[richard@localhost ~]$ ps -ef | grep netbeans

This is all I get. . .

That should be impossible. Are you sure the 1st window isn't returning from the command? If it's hanging in the script it should look like:
Quote:
[richard@localhost ~]$ netbeans
and not come back to your "[richard@localhost ~]$" prompt

It's not saying
Quote:
"sh: netbeans: command not found."
is it?

What does this say:
Quote:
which netbeans
The other thing I can thing of would be to trace the script and see what it shows but this will be very verbose:
Quote:
strace sh netbeans

Yeah, that's what I always do. But make sure you "yum remove"'d all those Fedora netbeans packages

@zorg863
netbeans is no longer an officially supported package in the Fedora repository system

I heard that from here:

http://wiki.netbeans.org/Category:Fedora:HowTo
Quote:

"Important
: NetBeans 7.0 or newer NetBeans packages will not be a part Fedora repositories anymore"
