Question can't launch gedit after using sudo -i

I have been 'cleaning up' a base system I use for cloning in VirtualBox. Don't recall removing anything 'important' but must have because now when I issue 'sudo -i' then the password, it gets to root ok, but now if I run an app like gedit, it complains with the messages
Quote:
No protocol specified
Cannot open display:
Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options.
Setting aside all the parms that could be supplied, what might be the cause of this change?

TIA

Re: can't launch gedit after using sudo -i

Try using the "xhost +" command before you sudo.

Never used this command before, but entering it gives the following:
Quote:
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host

Related to this problem, does anyone know how to get a 'simple' list of all packages installed in one system but not in a different system?

Re: can't launch gedit after using sudo -i

You forgot to say if your sudo gedit" worked after that. I'll wager it does.

The response you got is normal. The "xhost +" gives permission for other clients (from other users) to use your X server (display). After you set that command - then "sudo someXapp" should work.

This issue has zero to do with a packages installed/ It's basic security.

Learning to use "yum list installed" and 'sort' and 'uniq' solves your other problem.

Re: can't launch gedit after using sudo -i

Appologies for not indicating but it was 'successfull'.

I am still not sure why it went bad and why such an xhost command should be required to make it work again?

Also I took the system.package-list from both systems, kept only the ones marked as installed, sorted alphabetically, and ran a diff on the two files.
That gave me the list of stuf on the one system only, and the list of the stuff on the second system only.
