Question how to change sound to external sound card

Hi folks
On F11 a USB sound card got recognized immediately and began to be used.
On F12 the same sound card is listed but still all the 'dings' and 'dangs' of the OS as also all browser ( youtube ) sounds are heard from the PC speakers.
I tried to change the hardware to external ( did some playing around there ) ..no avail...the sound still comes of the laptop speakers. The mixer will not even show them as listed ( my sound card : if all is well as in Ubuntu its seen as a C USB etc )
What is the solution. can anyone help
