changing file ownership with nautilus f14

Hi, I just moved to Fedora from Ubuntu and several things are quite different!
in fact I just got help solving a problem I caused unwittingly.
while moving files from the old computer to this new one it set all ownerships to root, which wouldn't allow me access to them except in nautilus running as root. without realizing it would cause problems I proceded to change ownerships in the root nautilus window. long story short SELinux didn't like something I did and the computer wouldn't boot.
so after much help here, I'm still wanting access to my files, and am afraid to move more for fear of having the same problem.

so here are my questions
how would I take ownership of all of the files and folders from the old computer without hurting anything? (hopefully using nautilus or something similar, I'm not too familiar with the terminal)
or
how would I mount the drive and move the files so that they would not be set as root?
or
what question should I be asking?
my thanks in advance to anyone willing to help.

Re: changing file ownership with nautilus f14

In terminal type as root:
Quote:
chown -R desired_user:desired_group folder_with_your_files
The -R option will change both folder and included files owner recursively.
