No sound on XFCE Fedora 16 - Realtek ALC888

I performed a clean install of fedora 16 xfce and have no sound at all. ALSA mixer lists HDA ATI HDMI as a sound card and my Realtek on board card doesn't show up anywhere.

Can anyone help me on this one?

Can you post the output of:

lspci | grep -i audio
cat /proc/asound/cards

well I would try OSSv4 if I had issues with ALSA/pulseaudio sound. I already use it under Fedora 17 Beta and it works fine for me.

If you want to try it, you should remove pulseaudio. Also install kernel-devel, kernel-headers, gcc, binutils, make.

the linked package is closed source, but if you prefer to compile it from source: http://www.4front-tech.com/developer...es/stable/gpl/ (then also make sure that gtk2-devel is installed, so that you can use ossxmix as mixer)

the default xfce4-mixer should work with OSSv4, another option is ossxmix.

I don't know if this is related with your issue as my (only onboard) sound chip was present as an option in alsamixer.
What I found (F17/Xfce) was that this alsa-utils+pulseaudio makes things more complicated and, for instance, my mixer was always starting muted.
I set alsamixer with the detected alsa sound chip but then I set the mixer applet to open pavulcontrol instead of the Xfce-mixer. This (I don't know why) made alsamixer set itself with the 'default playback device' or something like that, which is the pulseaudio setting and now the mixer works properly.
In my case where the sound chip is detected, it was important to first use that in alsamixer as I could put all the relevant sliders up and unmuted.

I have a similar problem. My onboard soundcard (old Intel DG31PR motherboard) seems to be detected but no audio.

Use both the alsamixer -c0 and pavucontrol command (pavaucontrol should be in your applications menu somewhere) to set volume levels and to make sure necessary controls for sound aren't muted.

Add yourself (regular user) to the "audio" group:

su
enter root password
usermod -a -G audio $LOGNAME

You can put your log-in user name in place of "$LOGNAME" if you wish.
Be sure to examine all the controls in the pavucontrol application carefully.

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier; I was busy with academic work.

Anyway, I tried the above but it didn't work. But as I was playing an mp3 in vlc, I opened up pavucontrol and in the playback tab, I switched the vlc stream from the HDMI controller to Internal audio analog stereo and then it just started working! I don't understand how this happened, but now my audio works perfectly fine

I had sound problem like this. Everytime I installed the correct sound module it would be removed
in /lib/modules/3.3.3/sound. I then compiled a kernel with the sound driver integral with kernel code,
not a loadable module. Sound is working. Go to kernel.org and download a tarball image and do what
I did.
