Cleartext Shadow??

I have a cleartext password in my shadow file. Why is this?
I used adduser/moduser to create a test user and here is the entry in etc/shadow:

test:isthisthingon:14572:0:99999:7:::

Very Confused...

As some food for thought, try -

man 3 shadow
man 5 shadow
man 5 passwd
man 8 pwconv
man 5 login.defs

Try a more /etc/login.defs

Hope this helps.
