Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)
Cinnamon is quite independant of KDE. It should work quite well with KDE. There should be no issues ...

Cinnamon is it's own desktop. It doesn't "work" with KDE. It is an alternative to KDE.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)
The first thing I'd do is to install yumex ("yum install yumex"), then after running it and checking for updates, select 'groups' and you should see Cinnamon desktop as one option. The picklist will give you what's to be installed, then simply 'select all' and have yumex handle it. Since it's gnome-based, expect quite a few packages.

Re: Cinnamon guide for F16 (replacement for gnome-shell)
How are you trying to install the themes? The easiest way I know of is to untar/unzip the theme files and move it to ~/.themes directory. If you reopen the cinnamon settings, you should see the themes.
Of course, the theme should have the proper directory structure ...

it should just be a file named .themes is all nothing else open that file and put all of your cinnamon themes that you have downloaded and extracted. Then look into the themes under cinnamon settings.

Nope. It should NOT be a file called .themes. It should be a directory called .themes and the actual theme should be described by cinnamon.css ....
at least as per my understanding.

Did not want to derail the thread - that's why did not reply to that comment about folder/directory.

Re: Cinnamon guide (replacement for gnome-shell)
In an attempt to totally derail the thread, folder is what microsoft calls a unix directory. So they're not really the same thing!

Re: Cinnamon guide (replacement for gnome-shell)
just to answer the guy's question above about cinnamon themes not being seen in cinnamon's theme selector.
once you've downloaded it, unzipped it then
sudo cp -r /home/you/Downloads/random-theme/ /usr/share/themes/
i've found that some themes don't have the right permissions so they don't run
when this happens i just use chmod to fix it.
sudo chmod 755 -R /usr/share/themes/random-theme
no idea if this is "best practice" but you will find that the themes are visible then!
