You might try the steps in the third comment to this Ubuntu bug:

Thank you for the information, I attempted to install the libscan-extras package in the Add/Remove software Program - it said it couldn't find it. I then tried yum with the following result:
[root@TEDSDESKTOP sane.d]# yum install libsane-extras
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process
No package libsane-extras available.
Nothing to do
[root@TEDSDESKTOP sane.d]#
I did install gnome-scan-0.6.2-1.fc11 (i586), and gnome-scan-libs-0.6.2-1.fc11(i586)
Still no scanner found with scanimage -L
I then performed the following commands:
[root@TEDSDESKTOP sane.d]# lsusb
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 04e8:342e Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
[root@TEDSDESKTOP sane.d]# grep 342e /etc/sane.d/*conf
[root@TEDSDESKTOP sane.d]#
So grep returned nothing, Any other advice would be appreciated
Thanks...

I have already installed the Unified Print driver version 3.00.63, build 238. The printer works fine, if I download and install another driver could that not break what I already have? Is there a separate driver for the scanner?
Thanks for the help

A post here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=545290
says to add some info to the /etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.config file.

Thank you for the information, I have added the statement in the xerox_mfp.conf file, but the other file 60-libsane.rules file does not exist, here are all the files, is it names differently in Fedora? or should I create it?
[root@TEDSDESKTOP rules.d]# ls
10-console.rules 64-device-mapper.rules
40-alsa.rules 64-md-raid.rules
40-redhat.rules 65-md-incremental.rules
50-firmware.rules 70-acl.rules
50-udev-default.rules 75-cd-aliases-generator.rules
60-cdrom_id.rules 75-persistent-net-generator.rules
60-net.rules 77-nm-probe-modem-capabilities.rules
60-persistent-input.rules 78-sound-card.rules
60-persistent-serial.rules 79-fstab_import.rules
60-persistent-storage.rules 80-drivers.rules
60-persistent-storage-tape.rules 85-regulatory.rules
60-persistent-v4l.rules 88-clock.rules
61-option-modem-modeswitch.rules 95-devkit-disks.rules
61-persistent-storage-edd.rules 95-udev-late.rules
[root@TEDSDESKTOP rules.d]#
could it be drivers.rules? what do you think, also my scanner cannot be found in the sane.d/ directory using the grep command................thanks

By searching the web, I found posts that indicate that the relevant rules are now in /usr/share/hal/fdi. I found this post about Ubuntu that might be useful:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1190328
(Needless to say, I don't own a Samsung SCX 4300 myself, so my suggestions aren't based on first hand experience.)

Thank you for your help, I performed all steps indicated on your referenced page, still no scanner - seems that it is not a permission problem, there must be something vital which is missing. I don't think that reinstalling the Unified Print Driver would help either, the Configuator Program does not find the scanner, that tells me that there is something missing between the device and the driver.
I am at a loss at the moment, thanks again.

I looked on sane-project.org and didn't find the SCX-4300 listed as a supported scanner. This post on the Ubuntu forum:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1022880&page=2
hints that there is a Samsung scanner utility that will work with the 4300. I don't know any details about that utility. Have you ever heard of it?

I am not familiar with the Scan Utility, but I will do some searching and check it and let you know.
Thanks
OK, the scan utilities assume that your scanner is detectable, which mine is not. I have been reading some of the man pages concerning sane, looks like it is a "backend" problem, and Samsung is not supported. My knowledge of the configuration files is insufficient, so that is where I am at.
If you have any ideas I am all ears........thanks
