How do I make FTP and sFTP coexist?

I have a desktop where Fedora 16 has been installed along with httpd, php, mysql to run my home web page. Interestingly. both FTP and sFTP services have been enabled without actually trying to do. I have both proftpd and sshd installed and activated.

Now, I want to install almost the same things onto another desktop as a backup machine. The problem is I don't know how to enable both proftpd and sshd and work side by side. If I uninstall proftpd, sftpd works fine, but with proftpd installed, both ftp ans sftp don't work.

When I say, they don't work, I mean I can't ftp or sftp this machine from another desktop on the local area network. Can you help me?

Pinenut,

I'm not sure if this is the same problem, but I am unable to log into ProFTP in F16. I am getting "530 Login incorrect." I believe it was working in F15.

Brad, I think you are having the same problem as I do.
What I have done so far is that I've disabled sftp subsystem by editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config as below.
I put # back. Now ProFTP works as expected.

Quote:
# Subsystem sftp /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server

Re: How do I make FTP and sFTP coexist?

Hi Pinenut,

Quote:
# Subsystem sftp /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
This didn't permit me to log in to ProFTP here. Not a big deal, since I don't really use it, and I do use SFTP.

I saw some mention of this problem on a Fedora mailing list some days ago, so I hope someone is working on it for those that need FTP.

Re: How do I make FTP and sFTP coexist?

Brad,

I reactivated the sftp of ssh by uncommenting the line in /etc/ssh/sshd_config as below:

Quote:
Subsystem sftp /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
Now, both PfoFtpd and sFPT work well.
I don't what happened, but I am glad that they both work.

On second thought, I guess my problem began when I wanted to make ProFtpd have sftp function by installing mod_sftp. I did not know then that OpenSSH came with its own sftp subsystem.
Removing ProFtpd and reinstalling it may have done the trick.

Bash bug causing FTP logins to fail

There is a bash bug causing problems:

Until it's fixed, add the following to /etc/shells:

/bin/bash
/bin/sh

Problem solved for me.

Re: How do I make FTP and sFTP coexist?

Thanks, Brad, for your help.
Your problem must have been different than mine.
As I stated above, I solved my problem uninstalling and reinstalling ProFtpd without mod_ssl.

Hi Pine,

I'm glad we both got our problem's solved. While a bit indirect for us both, these forums can help find solutions.
