VLC is a good audio player. I use it on different distros without issue. I converted most of my music to Ogg Vorbis, but have a very large mp3 music library too. To me, the ogg music files sound better - compared to mp3's. I also install the Fluendo mp3 codec (for play back).
VLC does not have cross fade, and I do not mix playback of ogg and mp3's. My playlists are folders that I copy songs into. So I just grab a folder of music and hit shuffle. This works well with different portable music players and devices.
Give
VLC a try, great equalizer and good replay gain - a solid music player
