If Linux Mint is so wonderful
then why is networking seemingly so screwed up? When I boot into Mint I have an IP address and DNS is in place. I can ping but can't resolve host names, at least not until the system is damn good and ready. Don't have this problem with Fedora or Arch on the same computer.
I'll never understand why things that weren't broken needed to be fixed.
Minutes later, I've changed to static networking and all seems well. Shouldn't have had to.

Re: If Linux Mint is so wonderful
Moved to Linux Chat because it's not a rant against Fedora, it's Devs or Gnome Gnuts, etc.
On a similar, Fedora-related subject, yesterday my F18 stopped recognizing new external devices, whether cameras or USB connections. Reboot didn't help, changing SELinux to permissive didn't help. Booted to the partition that had F17, recognized the camera/USB drive just fine, copied off my photos, ported them to F18 and rebooted for the 4th. time. Now, with no updates or other changes, F18's recognizing everything just fine. Makes no sense either. Oh well, the sun's coming up in an hour or so and maybe everything will be fine today.

Re: If Linux Mint is so wonderful
Hi Greg. Yes, I've used OpenDNS in the past with all of my Linux installs. I've also used Google's DNS for a while, but I've not tried either with the current install of Mint.
I've set networking to static (for Mint only) and that seems to have resolved the issue. I just have a hard time understanding why something this simple is any sort of issue at all with, of all distributions, Mint, in 2013. The same issue appears with Mint on my laptop too.

Re: If Linux Mint is so wonderful
Hmmmm.
I've never had that issue pop up on Mint. My setup is a little different, though. I use a combination of OpenDNS and Google DNS servers.

Re: If Linux Mint is so wonderful
Happens consistently for me. I've installed Mint 4 or 5 times and it's always the same thing. This morning, I could access Google as my home page and Fedora Forum. CNN and Fox News, nope. Once I switched to static everything worked. As a matter of fact, I installed Dropbox under Mint and the second phase of the installation wouldn't work. It did work after switching to static. Go figure.
What baffles me is that Mint is not exactly an immature, new distro, given it's pedigree. It's supposed to be one of the most user friendly distributions available. Now if we were talking about something like Arch, LFS or Slack, or any other "minimal" distributions you might expect that you would initially have no networking and/or no Internet.

The same thing is true for minimize buttons... You would think that a distribution as large as Fedora would provide a minimize button on its windows by default
... not being able to resolve names at all is just a small price to pay for getting any sort of minimize button... har har.
On a slightly more useful note, is the /etc/resolv.conf file populated in good time? I had an issue once on FreeBSD (though using dhcp) where even though I would be given an IP, it would take about 5 runs of dhclient to actually fill out resolv.conf.
