Fedora 10 - Random Lock up

I've been running Fedora with the noapic option for a couple of days now. I thought the lock ups were gone, but yesterday I got one. However, it was different from the ones before: I could always move the mouse cursor and got some response from the keyboard, for instance if I pressed the power off button I got the shut down menu, but not this time. So maybe it is working after all and this was something different...

I am beginning to think that the issue is potentially related to ACPI not APIC, as it happens typically during idle system periods.

I am currently trying the "acpi=off" kernel option and I would recommend for others to try the same.

Since my original post, I discovered that I had two separate issues:
1) lockups in Gnome
2) the machine randomly rebooting

I found that the lockups in Gnome were caused by a problem with keyboard acceleration. Once I disabled this feature (System -> Prefs -> Hardware -> Keyboard -> Repeat Keys), the Gnome lockups went away. However, I'm not sure as to the exact cause of the lockups. I lost the post that led me to this discovery. If I find more information about this one, I will post. Of course, it is a drag not to be able to use keyboard repeat.

Secondly, the random reboots seem to be resolved by the "noapic" addition to the kernel command line. The reboots were preceded by this block of errors in /var/log/messages:
Feb 2 21:14:54 localhost kernel: Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 20.
Feb 2 21:14:54 localhost kernel: Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
Feb 2 21:14:54 localhost kernel: Dazed and confused, but trying to continue

Cacasodo, it seems we are reporting similar but different problems in the same thread...

I am experiencing complete h/w lock-ups (screen/hardware freezes) and not running gnome or kde. Even the kernel freezes and the machine does not reboot.

I tried the noapic option to the kernel but no luck.

I don't know if my lockups are Gnome-related or not. But at least I don't think that I have your keyboard acceleration issue (haven't had any troubles with thaaaaaaaaaat). On the other hand, random reboots is something that used to happen to me a couple of weeks ago, but then stopped. So who knows. In any case I've had no more lockups for now disabling apic, and I'm hoping it'll continue like that.

Yes, that's fine I was only trying to clarify the different issues so that there is no confusion...

I am trying to do the same, debug the issue... as it's the most frustrating thing to have your machine to randomly lock up!

I was in runlevel 3 on from bootup. Ran nothin but yum updates. It crashed on me, but this time somethin came across the screen and I think logged in messages (ill check a lil l8er). I went back in and did yum-complete-transactions and it froze again.

U right tho, its the most frustrating thing that can happen while on it.

Just out of curiosity try "acpi=off" in your kernel boot line and see whether your system stabilizes (I am trying it now, will report back if it crashed). I suspect it's an ACPI issue with F10 kernels and certain h/w configurations.

Hey all. Just installed Fedora 10 and it's seems to be all but perfect. The only exception is the random lock up. It seems to just freeze, mouse included, but if you leave it for a minute or 2 the mouse will start responding again but nothing else. I have to hard reset the machine.

I'm This > < close to switching entirely to Linux. If anyone can help me work out what causing this lock up you make week

Packard Bell Easynote MZ36
RAM = 1GB
GFX = ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M Series
DVD-RW = Mat****a UJ-850D ATA Device
WIFI = Ralink Wireless LAN Card V2
NIC = Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
CPU = Intel T2080 CPU
Sounds = Realtek HD Audio

Linux is installed on the second partition with WinXP installed on the first.

What kernel versions do you have installed? rpm -qa | grep kernel
Which version of ati drivers do you have installed
What does your boot logs say?
What does dmesg say?
What does your xorg.logs say?

Please paste each of these in pastebin (not all in 1 pastebin post either.)


Just to make things easier, please also install smart-gui. I'll explain later, why.

I updated my BIOS and my machine today to 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64
and I am still getting the same problem.

Is any maintainer interested in this problem or should we all just switch to
Ubuntu/Gentoo, etc? (or even windows)...

Please let us know why this is taking so long and there are no signs of
interest from the Fedora/Redhat Teams.

About three weeks ago, I built out a Fedora 10, x86-64 virtual machine. I've had not hangs or spontaneous reboots from this virtual machine and it was on for about a week straight.

VMware uses it's own version of PhoenixBIOS 4.0, Release 6.0:
VMware BIOS build 292

Seems like this might be a clue.

ps - I should add that I have not edited the base configuration of this vm; ie, I did not add "noapic" to the kernel command line or change any system files in expectation of potential hangs.

Same here. I froze earlier today too. Man I prefer Linux for the most part but I just cant seem to stay in long enough. Forced back 2 windows
