Same situation for me. Worked great in F7 and Ubuntu, though the sound IS garbled in Debian stable AMD64. I hope someone finds a workaround soon or an update fixes this, cuz it just sounds like my speakers about to blow up.Originally Posted by SDGathman

The answer to all of lifes questions are buried somewhere in the Google search engine.
Code:[Stephen@localhost ~]$ whatis this? this?: nothing appropriate
I reported in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=426602
I have the same problem on my laptop, when I play music it sounds like it's clipping at the higher and lower frequencies.
The card is a Conexant CX20549 (Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller) and like everyone else this card works fine under Ubuntu and Fedora 7.
Here's my /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 http://pastebin.ca/833312
I got it working! It seems the latest code in the alsa hg repo fixes the issue for my laptop!
Here's what you guys/gals can try:
Then reboot to make sure you're using the newly compiled module.Code:su -c "yum groupinstall 'Development Tools'" hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-driver alsa-driver hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-kernel alsa-driver/alsa-kernel cd alsa-driver make ALSAKERNELDIR=alsa-kernel all-deps aclocal; autoconf ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel make || make su -c "make install"
The reason you need to do 'make || make' is because (in the sources I downloaded) the first `make` fails because of a bad patch for the usbaudio module. You just have to run it again to actually compile the module that you need.
I added "options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=laptop" to my /etc/modprobe.conf because this makes the speakers turn off when I plug in headphones on my laptop (Lenovo 3000 V200).
I hope this works for you too!
[root@localhost ~]# hg clone http://hg-mirror.alsa-project.org/alsa-driver alsa-driver
bash: hg: command not found
[root@localhost ~]#
oops, you need to install mercurial:
Code:su -c "yum install mercurial"
worked great for me nikosapi; Thanks for the fix
A big improvement. The test sound, and some pop music is clear. However, Bach B minor mass rattles when the chorus swells. It is not the speakers, again it works same FC8 on different sound hardware (so it is not the speakers or recording), and works with EL5. A free file to demonstrate is at http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/...atas/hifi_play
The instrumentals are clear, and partial chorus. But full swell rattles. There is a recording of B minor mass on magnatune also.
Thank you very much for those code lines, Nikosapi !
I am more than happy, because I hadn't had sound for monthes with the Intel ich8 family sound card. But now, using your fix, everything works fine for me.

Ok.
I followed the post 34 & 35. Problem is I'm a Linux newbie and I'm getting an error
"The file /lib/modules/2.6.23.9-85.fc8/source/include/linux/version.h does not exist."
I found a post saying I need to get kernel-devel. I went to the kernel website but I don't understand how to get the source. Could someone help me?
Well, don't panic it is quite easy.
Open a Konsole and log as root by typing "su". You will be asked for the root's password.
Then, type :
and this is all.Code:yum install kernel-devel

Please install the package with full kernel sources for your distribution or use --with-kernel=dir option to specify another directory with kernel sources (default is /lib/modules/2.6.24.4-64.fc8/source).
You need to install the kernel-devel package:
Code:su -c "yum install kernel-devel"
