Credit for this info goes to bytesniper:

Sun Java has not made a 64 bit plugin yet. They have the runtime and the sdk but not the plugin. If you would like to use 64 bit firefox in FC4 download Blackdown's amd64 Java

    As root:
    Code:
    chmod a+x j2re-1.4.2-02-linux-amd64.bin
    Code:
    sh j2re-1.4.2-02-linux-amd64.bin
From the directory you extracted the .bin file :
    Code:
    cp -r j2re1.4.2 /usr/java
To get the plugin to work you will need to create a symbolic link to a few directories:
    Code:
    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib64/firefox-1.0.6/plugins/

    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/

    ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
Open up firefox and type about: plugins you should see Java(TM) Plug-in Blackdown-1.4.2-02 listed.

Also if you want to use this version for java applications:
    Code:
    alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/bin/java 2

    alternatives --config java
    And you will see:

There are 2 programs which provide 'java'.

    Selection Command
    -----------------------------------------------
    *+ 1 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java
    2 /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/bin/java

Enter to keep the current selection[+], or type selection number:

    Type 2 then Enter

To make sure you have the correct version selected type:
    Code:
     java -version
    You should see:

    java version "1.4.2-02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build Blackdown-1.4.2-02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build Blackdown-1.4.2-02, mixed mode)

Create a new file to set your java home path in:
    Code:
    nano /etc/profile.d/java64.sh
Type the following lines in this file:

    export J2RE_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2
    export PATH=$PATH:/$J2RE_HOME/bin

Save your changes and exit nano.

    Next make the code executible:
    Code:
    chmod +x /etc/profile.d/java64.sh
Next make these variables immediately available:
    Code:
    source /etc/profile.d/java64.sh
*( if you are having problems extracting or running the .bin file try resolving a few dependencies:
    Code:
    yum install compat-libstdc++-33.x86_64
    or
    Code:
    yum install compat-libstdc++.x86_64
    and
    Code:
    yum install xorg-x11-deprecated-libs.x86_64
    )

Thank you for your post....This works well with my FC4 amd64 machine and Macromedia Flash is also working. There doesn't seem to be any sluggishness or any other descrepancies using an i386 firefox browser.

For the life of me , I couldn't get java to work at all on this 64 bit machine, even though everything installed correctly. Couldn't even find anything written that actually helped me to get java to work on my machine.

Macromedia Flash is very straight forward that it does not support 64 bit processing at this time.

What I don't understand is having any "graphical browser" installed that doesn't support java or flash. To me its very lacking.

I hope another amd64 FC4 user out there gets to see this post.
