Alas, installing it with rpm lead to dependency hell, and yum localinstall was a waste of time. *Sigh!* The last time I had this problem (yum hanging) it took a reboot to fix, and with about 9 days uptime or so, I don't want to reboot unless I need to. Maybe F9 (on my box) is only good for a week at a time?

OK. Rebooting got yumex un-wedged. Alas, getting gtk2-devel installed was just the start. I ended up spending several hours downloading and installing about half a dozen dependencies just to install this applet. Don't get me wrong -- the program needs whatever it needs, and at least I didn't have to go hunting on the net for each one! I do wish, however, that there were a way to tell configure to output a list of missing files so that you can get them all at once. (Off-topic, I know, but it's worth mentioning.) It's nice being able to use my computer, now, for my morning alarm clock, and as I'm ex-Navy, Reveille seems appropriate.

I played with it for about 15 minutes. I got to the point of 6-7 missing lib dependencies and when I looked them up in yum they were, of course, named differently. Why does Fedora do this? Needless to say the reward was not worth the effort of googling each lib name and trying to figure out the Fedora counterpart.

Most of the names are just a matter of switching order (fred jones rather than jones fred). I think the argument could be made why do other distros name differently than RH? Either way, why is really irrelevant, they are going to do what they do. I did not have to google one of the dependencies, thanks to smartpm(I would imagine yumex could do the same thing).

True enough. Just like I can ask why the English drive on the wrong side of the road. But to an Englishman, it is the rest of the world that is screwed up.

Yes. With yumex I could have it look for gtk2-, then select the ones that seemed appropriate. In at least one case, I needed both the library and the devel. I hate to think of what itt would have been like with just the Fedora Add/Remove, because it only lets you select one package at a time. (Why they took out pirut, which Did The Right Thing for this is beyond me!)

You can use an alarm online without needing an applet:
