Question How to resolve constant freezing of Fedora 12?

I've recently installed Fedora 12, and it constantly freezes. The only common aspect between the freezes is that the freezes occurred when firefox was running. When it does freeze, I'm not able to use ctrl+alt+f[1...6] or even ctrl+alt+backspace. Has anyone else encountered and/or resolved this?

I had some 'hard crashes' in the F12 beta; but it hasn't been much of an issue for me since then. Since you said you recently installed it, have you updated since you installed? (i.e. 'yum update')

I've had Firefox freeze, but I've always been able to just kill or close FF without having the rest of the system go down; usually when attempting to watch a youtube video.

It's also possible it's a video (driver) issue, if you've updated then you should probably provide some specifics like system specs, any special video drivers (i.e. nvidia) installed, etc.

    Do this first
    Code:
    su
    yum update --enablerepo=u*g --exclude=Net* --exclude=nss*
Reboot and install proprietary graphics if using Nvidia following the tutorial on the Guides section

    Try troubleshooting using ssh when all freezes. You'll need to open port 22 using system-config-network{,-tui}

Get back with more details if still having problems.
For safer browsing, use OpenDNS nameservers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Here is a little voodoo for your Firefox King0. I too used to have Firefox hang up problems. A lot of it is Flash. When you go to a Flash intensive site, Firefox will sometimes hang, or crash. Install Flashblock:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/433

Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return.
Right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. Here are some more tweaks that are very useful.

This one: network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, don't set this higher than 8 connections, servers will only allow by default 8, and may not accept that many.

Here is a good one to make installing extensions a lot easier: security.dialog_enable_delay = 0

This should fix you right up. do you have gnash, or Adobe Flash installed? I find that the Adobe version works better, you can install if using Autoten, or Easylife. Good luck, and happy Fedoraing!

    Thanks for the insights.

Between running 'yum update' and using flashblock everything, at least for the past few days, seems fine. I have an ATI card (Mobility 9700) and haven't installed a proprietary driver as it is not supported by Fedora 12. As a side note when I tried to update via the 'update manager' the system would freeze/lockup; I had to use the command terminal.

From the moment I posted above the NetworkManager & nss issues have been ironed out, so you could try the command without --exclude switches.

Thanks for the help; but it seems I wrote too soon. Today was my first full day of extensive use of Fedora 12, and there were once again numerous lock-up/freezes, however, this time they occurred even when I wasn't on flash intensive sites.

Any ideas on how to solve this or what the root of the problem is? My system is a Sony VGN-S360P with 1 GB memory. If more information is needed, please let me know.

I've posted the output of the dmesg file. Noteworthy is the fact the system is freezing/locking-up when 1 or more apps (evince, thunderbird, etc.) are open, regardless if firefox is open or not. That seems to indicate that firefox is not the root cause.

    Thanks for the help.

same here. it started happening since the last xorg ati driver update ... and it's not related to firefox (it froze on me without firefox just using gedit to type some text). logging remotely in (trough ssh) to the "frozen" machine revealed that Xorg was using 100% Cpu. for now, the only solution i found is to log in remotely and issue a reboot on the command line (if i really need X) ... or simply forget about X and just do my work on runlevel 3.

This kernel should land in testing repo most likely on the next Tuesday. You can try it and see if the DRM changes in it fix the freezing problem.

    Isn't it wireless?

I was having similar problems. But it stopped bothering me once I started using wired connections instead of wireless. You may want to give it a try. It's not a solution but it will narrow down the problem.

I was getting freezups for a while then they stopped for almost 2 weeks, then returned. Mine never happen when I'm doing anything, always when the system is idle. It could be idle for a few seconds or hours. It's happened when various apps were open; Firefox, Thunderbird, KMymoney, but usually nothing is open.

When it happens the mouse and touchpad pointer can be moved around but does nothing (no menus and no activation). Everything else is frozen solid and it requires a hard shutdown.

I can't find anything in log files that sheds any light on the problem.
