mount/unmount usb flash drive

I have a 2G flash drive that when I copy files to it, I have to unmount it in order for it to save the file to it, is this standard or do I have a setting wrong? I have tried to get this working before but could never figure out how to copy a file to my usb drive and get it to stay when I removed the drive, the other day I unmounted it and all is well.

Is it possible to copy a file to the drive and not have to unmount it to make the changes?

Thanks
