No more Gnome (X) after Java correction

Hello,

I had Fedora 8 running with gnome.
I had problems with Java (it did not run in Firefox, nor Opera).
I "googled" for it, and found that there are serveral issues about Java.

I installed a manual workaround.
(found at http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.ph....28Method_1.29)
And it was working !!

Unitil I restarted my pc !

After restart I do not get my Gnome desktop any more (nore kde !).
I only get basic twm with xterm and a clock.

Who can help me to correct this ?
Mybe there is an issue about the PATH !
I have the impression that standard commands (as ls) do not work any more.
But "Midnight Commander" can be run without any problem !.

What is the advised PATH setting ?
Where do I configure this ?

The behaviour is identical when logged in as root and as normal user.
