wodim broken for CD writing in FC8

I've just upgraded to FC8 from FC5 with a fresh install, now I can't write CDs. Had no problem with FC5 and I've not made any hardware changes.

    Sample outputs as root user:

    wodim --devices

    0 dev='/dev/scd0' rwrwrw : 'PIONEER' 'DVD-RW DVR-112D'

Same error using K3B or xcdroast.

There was an issue with CD burning in Fedora 7 and as I recall it was related to wodim. There is a thread here that may be of help to you.

    More info

    Thanks glenzo.

I'd already set wodim suid but i didn't know about cdrdao, so I set that suid too.

I disabled haldaemon and autofs in turn too in case they were accessing the drive mid write. Disabling both gives same result, although I now get some more error info appended:

Errno: 5 (Input/output error), test unit ready scsi sendcmd: no error
    CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00
    status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)

Sense Key: 0x6 Unit Attention, Segment 0
Sense Code: 0x29 Qual 0x00 (power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred) Fru 0x0
Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid)
cmd finished after 0.005s timeout 200s

I'm doing all this from the command line by the way so no K3B issues are involved.

All my drives are IDE, no SCSI or SATA cards/drives exist in the system. I suppose it *could* be a CDRW drive error but strange that it always worked before the upgrade. I may try a live UBUNTU CD later.

You're welcome. I didn't know if this info would help you or not but I thought I'd post it anyhow. There's several threads here dealing with CD / DVD burning issues.

Ah hah! I fixed it... probably.

While messing with drives etc I decided to re-factor the hardware. I had a redundant hard drive (hda) in the system which had windoze on it and also served as the grub boot drive. I no longer have windoze so I took out the drive, spend a hour relabeling partitions and re-installing grub. I also added another CDRW and moved things about generally. Rebooted and tried wodim again. It all works again! I guess my convoluted hardware system was causing the problem. Although, it shouldn't really matter to the OS where stuff is connected it evidently does.

I keep notes in a local wiki. Here's a clip from what I entered about my troubles with GnomeBaker.
Choose Edit > Preferences in the menu, and select the Devices tab. In here, I found my CD drive was detected, but the device file was wrong. It listed it as /dev/sr0 instead of /dev/scd0. All I had to do was click in the field and update the value in there and viola! Fixed her right up. Don't know if this would have helped you. Suppose I could have mentioned it earlier as it sounds like your circumstances are similar.
