Is Fedora 8 i686 optimized?

Hi
I recently get a PIII box, and I would like to install linux into it. The first distro come to my mind was fedora since I used to use redhat linux long time ago. However, I know the world has changed a lot, and linux has become more matured and advanced. So I just wonder Fedora still support older hardwares or fedora can be optimized for PIII ?

Thank you

Sure; a PIII is i686. Actually, everything since "pentium pro" in 1995 has been i686 so no worries there. I'd grab a Live CD and try it out on your hardware. Stick to Fedora 8 (not the 'alpha' Fedora 9, still buggy!).

Thank you Bob. I'll install F8 and try. So is F8 i686 optimized? I mean complied with --march=i686?

Thank you
