icedtea the only option for java in fedora 8??

It looks like fedora 8 made using the 32-bit firefox (for java) a lot harder, and everyone seems to recommend icedtea java, which I got and installed, and tried to use in konqueror (I can't make it top priority in alternatives, I need sun java for a class that I'm taking).

However, I also need a working java plugin for a class, and icedtea doesn't show the applets properly-- in fact, when I try to load the one I need, it gives me a string of errors, and I ultimately need to kill konqueror to make it stop. I know that icedtea is installed properly, since it responds to some java-tests (including sun's own java test).

Are there any alternatives to icedtea? Are there any workarounds for using sun java?
