i recently acquired an old ibook g3 500mhz with a 2x agp ati card, a 10gb hd, and built in airport (wifi) (

What i intended to use this laptop for was mostly running media, accessing network shared drives, getting affiliated with linux and possibly accessing my windows xp pro. desktop from remote locations to monitor my torrent downloads, arrange files, ect ect.
I've currently got it running with xubuntu 6.06.. it runs good, but it tends to drag with certain tasks (media playback in particular). I know the laptop with osX ran dvds pretty solid but now (using xine i believe with libdvdcss2) it plays them back, but with allot of stopping and starting. I'm wondering if maybe its a video issue due to the fact xubuntu won't let me change the resolution without the screen going bonkers, even when using the listed supported resolutions. Overall the internet on xubuntu flies on that system and the OS itself is fairly solid with only minor moments of lag-ification. I did a clean format and install
Does anyone know if fedora would be a good distro alternative? and if so should i jump right into version 8 or should i use an older version for system speed issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
