no sytem option opens up

i m new to this linux just came from a windows world. if any one can help that would be great. last time i installed xcircuit it added many dependencies. then next morning i start the comp no system options work except terminal system logger and system moniter . i m unable to even installl any thing. add/remove option says its starting but doe not nor does software updater does not open up either i rebuiled the yum db it does not work either , plz help thanks in advance.
