network initialization

hello everyone...
I just completed installing fedora 8 x86_64.
I have problem with connecting to internet.
Firefox is saying proxy server is not found.....
I think the system is not connected to local area network.
So could you please tell me the settings that are needed to be set to connect the system to local area network and so I can view webpages in the browser
