With the latest kernel release came an odd problem... if I lock my screen with the "Lock Screen" menu option, or the inactivity timeout is reached, my desktop screen doesn't turn black, but, my mouse stops hearing "clicks". So far I've found no way out of the hang up this produces short of a reboot. (Really, even a CTRL-ALT-BackSpace boots me out of X, but leaves me at a blank black screen with an unresponsive keyboard and mouse.) I've demonstrated that the problem revolves around the latest kernel release 2.6.23.8-63.fc8; it goes away if I use the prior version: 2.6.23.1-49.fc8.
Anybody got any idea what's up with that? ANybody else seen a similar issue?
I have to admit, my setup is not plain vanilla. I'm running Fedora 8, on a Dell Optiplex 745 with an Intel E6700, ATI 2400XT, 4GB of RAM and VMWare Workstation 6. It seemed, at first, that it was a problem with VMWare, and it might still involve VMWare, but the troubles go away if I revert to the prior kernel. It isn't a defect in the machine I'm using, since the same thing is going on on a different, but identical, computer. I suppose it might also be the proprietary ATI drivers, which I *thinK* were installed on both computers for the new kernel. If I get a chance later I'll experiment to see if I can isolate the Livna ATI drivers.
I'd love to report it as a bug, but I'm not sure even how to classify it.
