need a bit of help here. Everything was working fine for me until I tried to install drivers 8.42.3 with kernel 2.6.23. I then realized that my card (a FireGL) is not supported by the new driver version, so I had to revert to drivers 8.40 and kernel 2.6.22.9-91.

1)After reinstalling my drivers I seem to be having problems running noXgl. I remember the command printenv DISPLAY used to return something other than :0.0 before when everything worked fine. Now I get :0.0. Hmmm...
2)I run gnome/metacity but there is a /usr/bin/kwin file. This file was installed by the package kdebase, which in turn was installed by beryl-kde, which is a dependency of beryl. So it seems that noXgl thinks I'm running kde, which is not correct. Anyway, I renamed /usr/bin/kwin to something else and still when I run:
    noXgl -a emacs
    I get
Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
    metacity: no process killed

Can you help me get noXgl working again? I suspect it's related to the DISPLAY :0.0 issue. And is there any way I can remove kde and keep beryl? Why does it have beryl-kde as a dependence?

I'm running Fedora 7 with kernel 2.6.22.9-91, drivers 8.40 (Beryl does work). Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Your card is unsupported by fglrx in fedora as you need ati version 8.35 for your card to work

    Use this to check

Have you tried the open source radeon driver ?

It was working fine before, maybe it's not officially supported but it definitely works. In fact I have Beryl and Xgl working right now, it's just noXgl that isn't working and I suspect it might be something very simple related to the DISPLAY variable.

Have you tried the open source radeon driver ?
Yes, but it's too slow for Beryl and other 3D applications/games.

    after adding this to xorg.conf
    Code:
    Section module
            load GLX
    EndSection
    I've got this

    Code:
compiz (core) - Fatal: No sync extension

Ok, I've _almost_ managed to resolve my problem
I edited /etc/gdm/custom.conf to add display :1 to the Xgl command, like this:
command=/usr/bin/Xgl :1 -ac -accel glxbuffer -accel xvbuffer

    Now printenv DISPLAY shows :1.0
However, when I try to launch anything on the :0.0 display or to run noXgl, I get:
    [root@sauron borrame]# DISPLAY=:0.0 emacs
    Display :0.0 unavailable, simulating -nw

I think I'm pretty close to getting it right but still need a bit of help

    Thanks!

    Woohoo!! I fixed my problem
I just ran the Xgl installation script with -r to remove it and the reinstalled it
    ./installXGL_EN -r
    ./installXGL_EN
Now everything works again like a charm, including noXgl

By the way, I still have a little problem when I run noXgl with the -a option. After closing the application and going back to Xgl/Beryl my screen gets messed up. The upper half is displayed on the lower half. Reloading beryl doesn't fix it, I need to restart the X server. Anyway, this is no big deal and I used to have this problem before so I'm going to assume it's due to my card not being officially supported.

You guys rule! I love you!!!
    Long live Beryl and Compiz
