Question 179 Updates Overnight (With Depend. Probs)? Is This Normal?

Hello All!

I just want to start out by congratulating the folks in charge of the Fedora 8 release. Awesome work! I think it just found a permanent spot on my HDD.

Anyways, I woke up this morning with the update icon in the notification area saying that I have 179 updates available. Is it normal to have this many updates with Fedora? Other distros that I have used only seemed to have this many when doing a fresh install a month or two after the newest release. I never saw that many overnight.

So, I wanted to go ahead with the updates but to my dismay, I have a list of package dependencies that cannot be found through yum (attached as txt).

I have modified the repositories quite a bit to get mpeg video, sound, as well as other things with the help from this script. Would that have anything to do with the problems I'm having?

Results from "yum repolist enabled":

updates-testing Fedora 8 - i386 - Test Updates enabled
Thanks for any help in advance!

Three conflicting repos installed (freshrpms, livna and atrpms) and you wonder why you have dependency conflicts Not sure about the redhat-kde ones either.

You've got a lot of repositories involved and that's where your conflicts are coming from. I'd get back to the 'standard' repositories, certainly NOT enabling Development, and then just use Livna as the 3rd. party repository. Since you've got very little time invested, I'd start with a fresh install.

Another option, if you do go the fresh install route is to use the Fedora FAQ link above to get things working. Max has done the research to give you a decent set of repositories and most things that you'll likely want.

I'd also knock out the updates-testing repo

Wow... that was really quick guys. Thanks a bunch. I'll go ahead and disable the extra repos, I just wasn't sure which ones to have!

I do see we got a new kernel on the way. The kmod-nvidia is up already but the kernel is not ready yet.

edit: sendderek, you might have to go with the fresh install depending on what packages you have already installed. I know that means a lot of work but trying to rid yourself of all the conflicts would be worse. Hope I'm wrong...

Does this look better?

Code:
Loading "priorities" plugin
Loading "protectbase" plugin
repo id repo name status
fedora Fedora 8 - i386 enabled
livna Livna for Fedora Core 8 - i386 - Base enabled
updates Fedora 8 - i386 - Updates enabled
Also, what does it mean to have the "priorities" and "protectbase" plugins enabled?

Sounds like I'll be taking the afternoon to redo my HDD. That's alright though... I was thinking about totally dedicating everything to Fedora 8 now anyways!

Thanks for the help guys! See you after the re-install!
