Scanner not detected
I'm having trouble detecting my scanner (CanoScan FB 320P).
According to the sane documentation this scanner is supported by xsane and its backend can be edited in canon_pp.conf.
However, when trying to detect it, i get nothing.
Code:
[root@localhost jeremie]# sane-find-scanner
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
# No USB scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a driver for your USB host controller and have installed a
# kernel scanner module.
# Not checking for parallel port scanners.
# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.
Code:
[root@localhost jeremie]# sane-find-scanner -v

Update
ok, just noticed that parallel port scanners are not detected automatically by sane-find-scanner.
I have nothing else connected to the parallel port. The scanner works fine under Windows 98.
I have updated the sane-backends which include sane-canon_pp which supports the FB320P.
I uncommented the canon_pp line in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf.
In /etc/sane.d/canon_pp.conf, the following are set:
Code:
ieee1284 parport0
calibrate ~/.sane/canon_pp-calibration-pp0 parport0
init_mode FB620P parport0
(I've also tries init_mode AUTO, same results)
After all that, when I run xsane, either in my account or as root, nothing is detected.
help!!, anyone that got a scanner to work on their parallel port....

I have the same problem with a CanoScan FB630P that uses the same canon_pp backend.
I have tried the same settings that you have all to no avail. On my PC the extra complication is that my scanner is attached to a NetMos 9835 Mulit I/O card with one serial and one parallel port. In Win2K my scanner won't work on the PC's parallel port but does work on the Mulit I/O parallel port.
In Fedora Core 3 the multi i/o card is detected and the serial port is assigned to /dev/ttyS14, but I am not sure if the parallel is assigned to parport0 or not. Hardware Browser shows;
Quote:
Modems : NetMos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller
Manufacturer: Unknown
Driver: parport_pc
Device: /dev/ttyS14
|
In the canon_pp.conf file I have tried parport0, parport1, par0, parport_pc, ttyS14 and sg0 all producing the same failed detection.
I would really appreciate some help of this.
Kerry.

Well defintely got the backend loaded, but it just can't find the scanner. Here is the output with debug level set to 4;
Code:

[dll] load: searching backend `canon_pp' in `/usr/lib/sane'
[dll] load: trying to load `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-canon_pp.so.1'
[dll] load: dlopen()ing `/usr/lib/sane/libsane-canon_pp.so.1'
[dll] init: initializing backend `canon_pp'
[dll] init: backend `canon_pp' is version 1.0.0

OK, some further information. I checked the scanner again in windows and it IS working. I then checked the Device Manager in Win2K and acertained that the Multi I/O card was using;
Code:
A000-A007
9800-9807
9400-9407
9000-9007
8800-8807
8400-840F
& IRQ 09
In Linux I checked lspci and the relevant entry is;
Code:
00:0f.0 Serial controller: NetMos Technology PCI 9835 Multi-I/O Controller (rev01)
Note those first few numbers. A vim /proc/ioports produces;
Code:
8400-840f : 0000:00:0f.0
8800-8807 : 0000:00:0f.0
9000-9007 : 0000:00:0f.0
9400-9407 : 0000:00:0f.0
9800-9807 : 0000:00:0f.0
9800-9807 : serial
a000-a007 : 0000:00:0f.0
a000-a007 : serial
amongst its listings. So I am guessing that I somehow have to get the sane backend to look at that 0000:00:0f.0 port however I tried using that instead of parport0 in the canon_pp.conf file all to now avail. I think I am getting closer but the missing link is still missing. I have the backend driver and I have the parallel port possibly available but they obviously still can't see each other.
Please help.

OK this issue is now solved, thanks to a kernel patch that has been developed to rectify issues with the Netmos I/O cards. My parallel port is now detected and the Canon is located. A test scan in "The Gimp" works excellently, but I do manange to crash Kooka whenever I try to use it, so still some digging to do but at least I can now scan in Linux so I have one less reason to go back to windows to do things.

Could you, please, post the link to the patch you used? So others who might have the same device and problem could get to it using the search function in this forum.
Thank you.

The patch is created by Bjorn Helgaas and I would think that it is up to him to release it. I don't think that it is yet publicly available as he continues to tweak and refine it. If anyone wants a copy of the file that I have then I would be happy to email it to them.
If I hear of it being made available for public download then I will of course post a link here, but I believe the intention is to get the patch incorporated into the standard kernel, so that it becomes unnecessary as a separate patch.

Hie,
i have Kernel 2.6.23.1-10,fc7 (fc7=fedora core 7), since this is , I believe, the latest, it does not auto detect the scanner on my m/c. When i run 'sane' it returns 'no scanner found'. Yet the scanner works fine on windows ( excuse the 7 letter word.)
Can you make any suggestions, I've tried to install 'scan 6' but to no avail. Is there something I am missing eh ???, thanks in advance DesC..........................
