FC7 on Compaq F500 Presario

I am installing FC 7 on a Compaq F500. When I do the yum update or update with pirut, I end up with 300+ packages doubly installed. And the system, including the windowing (KDE) becomes useless. The only solution is to do YAI. Any insight would be helpful.
