CentOS 5 is slow at system startup due to SATA
I put CentOS 5 on a Dell optiplex 745 desktop equpped with a SATA 3.0 hard drive. The problem is that it takes a couple of minutes for the CentOS 5 to start (to the login screen). The message on the screen is:
ata3: port failed to respond (30 secs)
ata3: SRST failed (status 0xFF)
ata3: SRST failed (err_mask=0x100)
ata3: SRST failed (status 0xFF)
ata3: SRST failed (err_mask=0x100)
ata3: SRST failed (status 0xFF)
ata3: SRST failed (err_mask=0x100)
ata3: reset failed, giving up
ata4: port failed to respond (30 secs)
ata4: SRST failed (status 0xFF)
ata4: SRST failed (err_mask=0x100)
ata4: SRST failed (status 0xFF)
ata4: SRST failed (err_mask=0x100)
I keep the system update but this problem is still not solved.

Last time I looked this was the Fedora forum. Perhaps asking in the CentOS forums would get you an answer.

what difference would it if he asked it here or CENTOS wayne? as im aware that Fedora an CentOS are based from Redhat , ok to a point fedora is its own Distro but both are RPM Distro's . so someone here may know the answer to his problem

What's the point of having separate forums if CentOS users and RedHat users ask their questions in the Fedora forum? They have their own support channels set-up. If you use your reasoning then Debian, Slackware, Mandriva and Ubuntu users could ask questions here, after all, they're all Linux. Mandriva is also an RPM based distro! Even though their codebase may be similar, I'm sure there may be subtle differences between the 3 distros and the OP would probably get a better answer in the appropriate forum. You have to draw the line somewhere.

umm no.. Ubuntu uses the Debain package Management along with Debain . . only difference that i can see if the way Mandriva an Fedora an redhat Design there Linux OS, same as Debain/Ubuntu , but just to say to the OP to go over the CENToS Forum an to seek these answers is a bit ignorant to say the least,, i would of thought us all using Linux could help out each other, , Sure you have to draw the line ( i do agree ) there's probably tons os Ubuntu Questions posted on this forum or debain if you look around,

RHEL, CentOS and Fedora share the same code base. RHEL is for the rich and CentOS for the poor and Fedora for OS zealots. That's why I post the question at this forum.

I didn't say Ubuntu uses RPM, I said they're all Linux. I have Ubuntu installed on another machine so I'm not ignorant of it's packaging system. I also said Mandriva uses RPM and hey, so does SUSE! Why don't we let them post their problems here too! I stick by what I said, the OP should ask his questions in the appropriate forum. Maybe we also allow people who dual boot with windows to post their windows problems too, after all they're still Fedora users!

I'm not an OS zealot and I resent being called so. As I said, please take your question to the appropriate forum.

Although rondonjin is correct in that you most probably get better support for CentOS in CentOS forums, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to help you.
Since you're only giving small bit of error message to us, it doesn't make it easy for anyone to try to figure out what is causing it.
Start by having a look at this: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/...d.php?t=127061
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedor.../msg03614.html since it's a kernel issue, you should check CentOS updates, it probably has been patched already.

Any chance that your motherboard only supports sata 1 (the older sata). I know on some motherboards they just kinda flake out when they see sata 3. There is usually a jumper on the drive to have it fall back to the older standard.

Thanks, but the chipset on Dell Optiplex 745 is a intel 965G that support SATA 3.0.
