is fedora supposed to focus on the server or the desktop?

Until this week, i never really interacted or read the forums actively, and I've come to realize that a lot of hobbyists are running Fedora on their desktops, personally I run all my servers on Fedora, and one of my desktops that I play with on fedora, the rest is windows. I always assumed that fedora was marketed towards servers.....

what's the take, is fedora mostly aiming at the desktop or at the server?

Well I am new user and I have to say its my impression that Desktop seems to be the way they are going, just look ay it. I think they have done a wonderful job to make a nice and clean experiance right out of the box. IMHO

Since Fedora has a 6 month release cycle and an average version life-span of 18 months I wouldn't think they're aiming at the server market. Servers need to be supported for a lot longer than that, hence RedHat and CentOS. Also, being a cutting edge distro where things might not work 100% it wouldn't make sense to use it in such a critical environment. (Unless it's for home use)

It's a swiss army knife approach to any and all Linux related server/desktop/other uses test bed.
Just look in the how-to section...doesn't seem to be anything left out in there for sure.
Actually most of the releases are based on rather secure and safe reliable running "servers" (outside of too many enabled for most desktop users and needing a good config session), it's the desktop components that are the basic problems....i.e. wireless, video, touchpads, sound, stuff desktops use.

It looks like they are heading for a support life of only 12 months now. So I would not use it on a server. For servers I would go with Centos (redhat with logos removed) with 5 years of support. When Fedora 8 is released in September(?) support for FC6 drops. Release +1 is now what is supported.

Fedora is sort of a testbed for RHEL -- it's aimed mostly at the desktop, but could be used for servers. Since it does contain a lot of experimental stuff one shouldn't be using the latest version, however, and certainly not for things where it has to be up all the time (some things may break).

Since it's a testbed for RHEL, you may want to consider using that instead -- if you like Fedora, you should have a chance at liking RHEL (i never used it, so I can't really tell if it's all that similar, but I could imagine that it is). Debian should be a nice alternative if you want a really great server distro.
