    not quite there

Using Fedora 7 and the xorg-xserver from FC6 and this guide I was able to install beryl and xgl. Everything as far as installation went ok except for when I actually log into an Xgl/beryl/compiz session. It seems that my desktop does not refresh. I can move the windows around, rotate the cube but all actions such as right mouse clicks, text entered into a terminal (or anywhere else for that matter) does not appear. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on? I have no errors in any logs. I am begging to think that my xorg.conf might be at fault. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Try this

    # Xorg configuration created by system-config-display

    Section "ServerLayout"

    Option "BlockSignalsOnLock" "on"
    Option "ForceGenericCPU" "off"
    Option "KernelModuleParm" "locked-userpages=0"
    EndSection

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Videocard0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection

    Section "DRI"
    Mode 0666
    EndSection

    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "False"
    EndSection
If this fails try deleting .beryl

    su
    rm -rf /home/*/.beryl
Change the * to your username

Which driver did you use ? ( freshrpms or the driver I compiled from the Livna source )

Tried the xorg, conf you mentioned as well as removing .beryl and still the same symptoms. I have used 3 or 4 different fglrx drivers. I have tried both your recompiled drivers and freshrpms as well. All the drivers I have tested seem to be working fine aside from this xgl/beryl/compiz problem.

    Thanks for your help.

I dont think nicofo has manged to test the script in F7 yet so it may still need some tweaking to work in F7 .
    Is compiz working OK ?

Can you start beryl in a terminal with this command and post the output

    beryl-manager

Compiz does not work at all. At one point it was working, Im not sure why it suddenly returns this error since I have not modified anything? Here is the output of compiz and beryl:

compiz: No manageable screens found on display :3.0

All the logs are clean, as far as Xgl is concerned.

    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
    (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER

    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) No FontPath specified. Using compiled-in default.
(WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
(WW) LoadModule: given non-canonical module name "glesx.so"
(WW) <default pointer>: No Device specified, looking for one...

I seem to remember reading somewhere about someone having a similar problem but it was resolved with some Options in the Device sections to the fglrx driver. Does this sound like it could be due to some driver options?

    Thanks.

Your fglrx driver is running OK , I Have never come across this problem before and don't know that much about XGL as I am a Nvidia user.

Ok so here's what I am trying to do.

I recently upgrade to FC7 from FC5. I had a dual monitor configuration in FC5 where the screen would span both monitors. (I could drag a window from one monitor to the second) with no problem. Now under FC7, when I selected "Dual Head" It gave me two unique destops, each with their own taskbar, etc. Nor can I drag a window from one to the other as each screen is seen "separately". I would like to restore this functionality.

    Here's my video card:
    lspci | grep ATI
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV370 [Radeon X300SE]

I copied the contents of my old FC5 xorg.conf file thinking I could edit the new xorg.conf file and viola! However, that has not worked.

I attempted to use the steps in your post#2

I have already covered this in post #1 of this thread section 3

Didn't you see the divider line ( anyway just how many drivers do you want ) and why do you think I am serving them

I did not read Post #1 because in big red letters it said to see post# 2 for FC7. I see now I should have at least glanced at it (I have now made the changes listed in post #1). I'm sorry, I'm a bit of a n00b trying to get some linux help. It wasn't my intention to ask you to do it all for me. I tried to follow your instructions to the best of my ability and I was trying to be as detailed as possible when communicating to you where exactly I was struggling, I thought being detailed would help you help me. If my questions are too mundane, I apologize...

For some reason I cannot get the ati drivers installed

    [root@localhost livna]# ls
    kmod-fglrx-8.36.5-3.2.6.21_1.3194.fc7.i686.rpm
    livna-config-display-0.0.12-1.lvn7.noarch.rpm
    xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.36.5-1.fc7.i386.rpm

    [root@localhost livna]# rpm -i *
    package livna-config-display-0.0.12-1.lvn7 is already installed

    [root@localhost livna]# service fglrx start
    fglrx: unrecognized service

    [root@localhost livna]# fg<TAB> ## Apparently I have no fglrx binaries
    fg fgconsole fgrep

No question is irrelevant ( I edited post #2 because of it ).

You only need one driver .

    I then tried:
    WORKS: rpm -ivh http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshr...1.fc.noarch.rpm
    WORKS: yum install ati-x11-drv
    this covers it.

now to remove the second driver , I have added some commands to make sure all the package are matched and up to date and not conflicting .

    su -
    yum update kernel
    yum install kernel-devel
    yum remove kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-libs-32bit livna-config-display ati-x11-drv
    yum install ati-x11-drv

reboot ( this is needed to build the dkm for the driver )

then edit your xorg.conf ( dont forget to save the changes )

    reboot or restart X

leigh123@linux, thank you for your posts. Recently I installed F7 on my pc with ATI X1300 graphic card and a wide 1440x900 monitor. I was once not able to get the right resolution for the display. The display always sticks to 1280x1024. By following your post 2, and I got the resolution to 1440x900. But another problem showed up. I just got a blank white screen when playing video with totem or realplayer. So what's the problem?
