ATI Radeon 9550 and FC6... I think I botched something up.

Alright, I've searched around, but can't seem to find anything here that looks directly related to my problem, but then again I'm not sure exactly what the problem is.

In any reply, please be as specific as possible. I'm new to Linux and I'm still learning.

I downloaded the FC ATI Catalyst drivers from ATI.com. Following their instructions, I managed to get the driver installed, although I think not correctly. Here's where I stand now:

    1. When selecting "ATI Catalyst Control Center" from the menu, nothing happens. The computer continues to function, but the CCC never comes up.

    2. I'm not getting hardware acceleration. No worse than I was before, yet no better. Nothing has changed. It's as if I never installed the driver at all.

Whatever it's done, it doesn't seem to have installed the drivers right. I don't recall what command I used to install the driver, but it was done from the terminal and it went through the whole process and confirmed everything was setup correctly.

I need to know where to go from here. Do I need to remove the driver? If so, how? What can I check to see what I've done wrong? etc. etc. etc. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Please ask for whatever additional information is needed. I don't know what to post that would be useful in troubleshooting this.

I‘ve learned it's the driver's bug. Maybe we can only wait for the next ati driver

So there's no hope for making my ATI card work properly in Linux at this time?

If you are using FC6 the bug will not affect you.
However you will probably have to reinstall because you have used the generic ati instructions
    which dont work for Fedora.

You have to build rpm's from the installer instead ( Hard work )

If you follow the link in my sig you will find a complete howto for the fglrx driver for FC6

Please remember you have to remove the old driver first.( or it will not work )

It only affects FC7 ( 8.37 is affected as well )

Thanks Leigh. I'll take a look and see if I can figure it out. I assume I need to remove the ATI driver I've put on then?

I can't seem to get into my Package Manager. The "Retrieving software information" comes up, the progress bar gets to about 25%, then it tells me "Unable to retrieve software information. This could be caused by not having a network connection available." and Details just says "None".

I've tried both restarting the computer and resetting the router/ADSL modem, yet it continues to happen. Any ideas?

EDIT --Scratch that. It has suddenly just started working right. What am I looking for? I can't seem to find where to remove it.

It depends how you installed the driver.

did you install it like this ( wrong method for fedora )
    sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.37.6.run
to remove the driver installed this way use the following

If the ATI Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver was installed using either the Automatic or Custom options, then do the following:

    1. Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the /usr/share/ati folder.
    2. With super user permissions, enter the command "sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh"
    or like this
    sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.37.6.run --buildpkg Fedora/FC6
Uninstalling the ATI Linux Proprietary Graphics Driver

Un-installing the ATI Linux Proprietary Driver is dependent on the mode of initial installation.
    Automatic or Custom Driver Installations

If the ATI Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver was installed using either the Automatic or Custom options, then do the following:

    1. Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the /usr/share/ati folder.
    2. With super user permissions, enter the command "sh ./fglrx-uninstall.sh"

You have now successfully uninstalled the ATI Linux Proprietary Graphics Driver.
    Package Generation

If the initial installation of the driver was done via the Operating Systems package management software (rpm, apt, etc.) then please use that package management software to remove the ATI Proprietary Linux Graphics Driver.

It was the first option. It has now been uninstalled and I'm going to follow the directions in that link. I'll get back with the results soon. Thanks.

Ok, here's where I am. I managed to get this far with the i686 kernel, but something still isn't right, because from what I've read, there should be no i586 still on the system:

    kernel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i586
    kernel-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6.i686
    kernel-headers-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6.i386

And I did su -c "rpm -ivh --replacefiles --replacepkgs kernel-2*.i686.rpm"

Where do I go from here?

Reboot to the new kernel (kernel-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6.i686 ) and proceed with the howto

That is normal as the packages already installed are up to date , carry on to the next command

My apologies for the delay in replying. I've been in the hospital for the last 2 days. Feeling better now.

Ok, I'll carry on with the commands after that and let you know how it goes. Again, thanks a million for your help.

Still seem to be having problems getting this to complete. When I carry out the last two commands, I'm drawing errors about not finding XORG:

    [root@localhost ~]# service fglrx restart
    Checking for module fglrx.ko: [ OK ]
Enabling the fglrx driver: Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/sbin/fglrx-config-display", line 148, in ?
    app = fglrxConfigDisplay()

    raise livnaConfigDisplayError(XORG_NOT_FOUND)

    [FAILED]
    [root@localhost ~]# fglrx-config-display enable

    raise livnaConfigDisplayError(XORG_NOT_FOUND)
NameError: global name 'XORG_NOT_FOUND' is not defined
I've review all the instructions twice and can't seem to see what I've done wrong. Have I missed something?
