FC4 /usr in LVM FC5 or 6 upgrade doesn't see it

Hi I'm trying to upgrade my FC4 x86_64 nvidia nforce and nvidia gt7800 box to fc6. Hard drives are SATA and the lvm has linearly mapped system partitions as well as a data volume with striping (raid 0 ). I've tried the following:

1) yum update: removed all at-rpms, yum clear all, rpm -Uvh fedora-release-whaterver-> yum update = dependency failure. I've tried different schemes like upgrading the kernel first, rebooting, etc.
2) FC5 DVD -> graphic install fails due to video -> retry with "linux vesa" works, but then fc5 install fails to see my fc4 installation which is on an lvm volume, not striped, just linearly mapped. The problem is that there's a ton of stuff in the perl directory, and /usr/local is on the same partition so I can't just wipe and install.
3) FC6 DVD has the exact same problems as above.

So, what else? Can I somehow stop anaconda before it detects previous versions, so that I can mount the lvms? How? Can I somehow use a driver disk during the installation? This is the type of stuff that makes me want to just ditch the entire rpm/fedora structure.

Thanks,

Joaquin

Nobody knows why anaconda would fail to recognize an FC4 install on LVMs?

I solved the problem by installing using yum upgrade. rpms that needed dependencies and those weren't met were removed and the rpms that made yum upgrade fail because they conflicted, were installed with --force or --nodeps. I kept a list of the rpms that I uninstalled and if they were important and not avalable after the upgrade, I reinstalled them for the proper fc version. Rpms that were installed using force were later removed and reinstalled or at least verified. I'm up to FC6 now with this method. Anaconda gets a big fat middle finger for not recognizing my lvm root partition.
