Upgrade from FC5 to FC6 no user interface

Hello,

newby here. I installed FC5 on my IBM X20 Thinkpad with no issues and was able to log into the UI without any issues.

I then upgraded (the next day) to FC6. The upgrade went fine, but when I booted up after the upgrade all I got was the command line with a root login prompt. Where is my fancey UI?

hummm - i bit the bullet and reinstalled FC6 from scratch - still same issue - not desktop just command line. The only thing I noticed was that the install said something about "not enough memory to run graphical instal gui" - so I am assuming I do not have enough memory (92mb) to run the user interface desktop once installed?

I've been unable to find any "minimal requirements" (part fromth process type) in any of the docs. Anyone any adivce? It ran FC5, with the desktop, with no issues with the same amount of memory.

How to I manually kick off the desktop interface from the command line?

Anyone any ideas - please help! Otherwise I'm going to have to stick XP back on this box, and I really wanted to give a LINUX distro a go.

Scrib,

The minimum specifications for running Fedora Core are here: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...TES-en_US.html

They say that you need atleast 192MB of RAM to run in graphical mode. You should be able to type startx from the console to start graphical mode, assuming it has been installed and configured correctly.

If you really only have 92MB RAM you are belw the minima for FC6 ( 128MB for text mode, 192MB for graphic mode ) On the other hand if it's a typo for 192MB then it's possible you are currently in run level 3, rather than 5. You could try logging in as root, then running ' startx '.If that brings up the graphic interface then you need to edit /etc/inittab by changing the line ' id:3:initdefault ' to ' id:5:initdefault ' , save, then reboot. You should then be able to log in graphically as root and create a user account. Hope this helps.PS I'm running FC6 on a lapptop with 192MB RAM, so it does work, but it helps to keep the install as light as possible!

humm on startx worked ok.

I changed the file as you said and this time it booted and went into the graphical display while booting. But it then went back to the command line logon.

When I logged in as root and typed startx I got a message of:

"Server is already active for display 0"

Just as a check, you did save the change to inittab? If you did this may be a wobbly which my FC6 installs throw occassionally, there is a command which will sort it out, though I haven't used it myself, hitting the reboot button ( on my desktop ) invariably solves the problem. I'll see if i can track it down and post it for you.

Yeah, I remember this bug. Once you do a yum update you will be ok. To this day on boot my FC6 will sit in init 3 for about a second and a half before hitting the graphic login.
