Realtek onboard LAN adapter not recognized

Just upgraded my system as follows:

Motherboard ASUS P5VD2-X
3.4MHz Dual Core Intel processor
Realtek RTL8110SC Gigabit LAN Controller (onboard)

I re-installed FC6 but the network hardware was not recognized. During boot I get the message:

"device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization"

There is only one Realtek adapter listed on Network Manager, but it does not work. I also tried several other drivers but no luck.

I then turned to the motherboard support CD, which offer Linux drivers for the Realtek network adapter. I copied the tarball into Desktop and followed the instructions:

make clean modules
make install
depmod -a

I got error messages after the first command but tried <make install> anyway. Here are the results:

[root@localhost r1000_v1.04]# make clean modules
make -C src/ clean

[root@localhost r1000_v1.04]# make install

install -m 644 -c r1000.ko /lib/modules/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6/kernel/drivers/net/

make[1]: *** [install] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ac/Desktop/r1000_v1.04/src'

Any suggestions?
TIA, AC

Try first to update the kernel. You MB is a recent model - the support for your NIC could be in a newer kernel than the one shipped with the install media. For a P5VD2-VM I had to use a 2.6.20 kernel.
EDIT: I just checked the manual of the MB - the ethernet controller is the same as yours, so the kernel update should fix your problem

I had this problem on a shuttle PC and used a PCI NIC to run a yum update, then it recognized it...I know that's not always an option, but we happned to have one at work.

Thanks daneel971 and zackf. I borrowed a D-Link NIC so I can update the kernel, so I'll try it know. Thanks a lot. AC
