Unhappy Fan not running - laptop overheating

Hi, i am very new to linux

I am running fedora core 6 on an HP Compaq nx6125 notebook and the system fan is essentially dead when it boots into fedora, the CPU just keeps getting hotter and eventually overheating the laptop, it powers on fine during bios and when the system used Windows *shudder*. I have checked the BIOS and there are no fan controlls in there

any help would be greatly appreciated

Nevablade,

Check that you have gotten the correct kernel. The i586 kernel doesn't play well with fans on laptops.

Go here and read about the details.

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC6Common

If you show the i586 kernel, simply use the provided shell script to replace it.

Hope it helps.

Dan

EDIT: I also use the userspace throttling option to slow down the processor in my HP 4000 series. Helps conserve battery, and holds down the heat issues.

I believe this is a known kernel bug, see http://bugzilla.kernel.org search for fan and acpi. Kernel 2.6.21 might solve this

take care when suspending to RAM, your fan will probably stop working afterwards. If this is the case, I found a solution.
