Booting error after kernel Compilation

Hello Everyone,

Recently i tried to compiled Linux Kernel 2.6.15 in FC4.

The machine has winxp also installed in it.

However when i try to boot the system in newly compiled kernel it gives the following error during boot.

Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
No volume groups found
Unable to find volume group "VolGroup00"
ERROR: /bin/lvm exited abnormally with value 5 ! (pid <something> )
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
ERROR opening /dev/console!!!!: 2

and then some errors and kernel panic.

I'am new to FC4.

Can anyone help me get over this problem

Thank you
Manoj

Go back to a working kernel. You did keep your old RPM'ed kernel, right? Just choose to boot into that one and at least your machine will be useable.

Now, why do you need to compile your own kernel? There may be simpler RPM-based alternatives.

Yeah, I'm no expert but it sure sounds to me like you didn't include support for the filesystem.
Either way you need to boot back into your old kernel and try, try again.

Yeah - something is missing, but it's hard rto see what without more info.

PLEASE note that in addition to making the kernel, you have to make and install all the modules (they are kernel rev specific so you should ALWAYS give your kernel build a local name (the EXTRAS flag in the Makefile). Also, after installing the kernel and the modules please verify that you have built a new /boot/initrd... file that matches. (this *should* be done w/ make install I think). Then please note that the initrd must contain all the critical modules, and these should be listed in /etc/modules.conf. I *suspect* that you don't have functional lvm modules because you did not build new modules for the new kernel.

Yes i do have the old installed kernels and its does boot with them and i'am able to change the options.

Also i tried to install the kernel using rpm method from source rpm in which case also i ended up with the same problem.

I have compiled the same kernel on Redhat 9, RHEL 4 and also on another machine with FC4 but without WinXP.

I feel the problem is with the kernel options that are chosen by default. i went through the older posts in the list. problem seems to be that i have not choosen some kernel configuration related LVM.

Can anyone of you guide me through this pls?

i have select ext3 filesystem as built-in and most other file systems as modular.

Rule of thumb for me is to compile support for whatever filesystem I'm using as built-in and not a module. But if you search the forum for kernel compiling you will come across links to tutorials.
