dvdrom goes missing after install completes

Ive a slight problem with a new install of fc6 on my laptop. My dvd drive is now not being detected, which is odd as i installed fine from it.
There seems to be nothing in the /dev/ that it could possibly be, after booting the linux rescue from the installation dvd the drive appeared under that as hdd, and this is definatly not in /dev/ when i boot into the installed version.

if i compare an lsmod from the linux rescue and the installed version the modules below look like they could be related to the problem and are missing from the installed os:

cdrom, sr_mod, ide_cd, libiscsi, iscsi_tcp, scsi_transport_iscsi

i modprobe the missing modules in but it made no difference that i can see and i have already stretched the limited knowledge i have of linux to get this far

The motherboard chipset is intel Mobile 945 based and the sata is Intel 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller IDE (rev 02) and the drive is a sony dvd rw

the drive works fine under mandriva 2007, but has the same issues when using ubunto 6.10

anybody out there got some ideas of what else i can try
