cannot get dma on dvd drive on dell e1505 laptop

I don't get it, it's supported and works in XP, but on fc5 with kernel

Linux laptop 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5smp #1 SMP Mon Sep 11 01:32:34 EDT 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

it says
/dev/hdc:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma = 0 (off)


from hdparm -i

DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2


help?
