boot hangs after fstab, shutdown hangs too (FC6 only)

I was holding off posting this...but I've run out of ideas and couldn't find anything in the forum addressing this...

Boot-up hangs after displaying the "Enabling /etc/fstab swaps". If I just leave it (sometimes 5mins, other times >15mins) it comes up and presents the logon prompt. Normally I give-up before that. Disk is busy for aboput 15secs, then almost no disk activity.

Occurs on *2630.fc6 and 2647.fc6.

Shutdown also hangs for varing periods of time.

Core 5 does NOT have this problem.

Any ideas what I can check to see what is hanging the boot-up?
